Type “best way to learn Morse code” into Google and you will get a lot of conflicting advice. Learn the alphabet first. Use mnemonics. Start at 5 WPM and speed up. Practice every day. Practice for an hour. Buy a key. Watch YouTube videos.

Most of it is well-intentioned. Most of it will cost you weeks of wasted effort.

I built Morsy after watching the data from a few thousand users try those approaches and plateau, or quit. The method that actually works is not complicated, but it is specific — and the common shortcuts that feel helpful at first reliably fail around the same point. This post covers what the data shows, why the common alternatives fail, and the exact 8-week plan that gets most adults from zero to conversational Morse.

Why most people fail to learn Morse code

The ARRL’s Morse code learning resources document a well-known failure mode: beginners who train at 5 WPM standard speed hit an unbreakable ceiling around 10-13 WPM. The wall is so predictable it became a defining feature of the FCC-era 5 WPM license exam — most operators who could pass the test could not speed up beyond it.

The reason is neurological, not motivational. Slow Morse and fast Morse are not the same signal played at different speeds. A dit at 5 WPM lasts 240 milliseconds; at 15 WPM it lasts 80 milliseconds. Your brain does not scale the same pattern — it learns a different pattern. An hour spent drilling at 5 WPM uniform speed has to be un-learned when you try to copy at real speeds.

The mnemonic method has a parallel failure. At 5 WPM you have about 1.2 seconds per letter — enough time to recall “A is di-dah” through an association. At 15 WPM you have about 400 milliseconds. At 20 WPM, about 300. The association reflex simply cannot run in that window. Mnemonic-trained learners almost always plateau around 10 WPM for the same reason slow-speed learners do: they built the wrong neural circuit.

Our finding: In Morsy usage data across roughly 3,400 active learners over the past 6 months, users who started with 5 WPM uniform speed took a median of 12.4 weeks to reach 15 WPM copy. Users who started with Farnsworth timing (20 WPM characters, 5-7 WPM effective) took a median of 5.3 weeks. The difference is not willpower — it’s method.

The three failure modes I see most often:

  1. A-Z alphabet order. The letters A through E look very similar on a chart and sound very similar to a beginner ear. Learning them in sequence means you spend your first week building confusion, not confidence.
  2. Uniform slow speed. As explained above — you are memorizing a different signal from the one you need.
  3. Inconsistent practice. Two missed days in a row and the previous session’s gains start leaking. The retention curve for new auditory patterns is steep.

The Koch method: the proven order for learning the alphabet

In 1935, Ludwig Koch documented what remains the most efficient Morse code teaching sequence on record. Students using his method mastered the full 26-character alphabet at 12 WPM in just 14 hours of practice — spread across 24 to 28 half-hour sessions. Classical A-Z methods required seven weeks for comparable results, testing approximately 100 subjects (Quentin Santos, “Koch’s Dissertation on Learning Morse Code”, September 2023, retrieved 2026-08-02).

The method’s key insight: instead of introducing letters in A-Z order, start with the two most auditorally distinct characters — K (dah-di-dah) and M (dah-dah) — and add one character at a time, always choosing the next letter for maximum contrast with what the learner already knows.

The result is that by the time you encounter a potentially confusable pair (A/N, for example), your ear is already trained well enough to distinguish them. You never spend a week drilling letters that sound similar before your auditory pattern recognition is ready.

Every serious Morse trainer in 2026 uses Koch order as its default: LCWO, G4FON’s desktop trainer, and Morsy all start with K and M. Notice A does not appear until position 6, and N does not appear until much later. The pair is separated deliberately. By the time your ear hears both, it is already trained to catch the distinction. Farnsworth timing: the speed secret that halves your learning time

Farnsworth timing solves the slow-speed problem without throwing beginners into the deep end. Individual letters are sent at 15-20 WPM — real audio shapes, identical to what you will hear on the air. The gaps between letters are stretched so the effective message speed drops to 5-7 WPM. You get extra thinking time between letters without hearing a distorted, slow version of each letter.

The standard ratio for beginners: 20 WPM characters, 7 WPM effective (written as 20/7). The ARRL and the CWops CW Academy both default to this ratio for new cohorts.

How to progress: close the gap by roughly 1 WPM per week. 20/7 in week one, 20/8 in week two, 20/9 in week three. When effective speed reaches character speed (20/20), you are copying standard-timing CW and Farnsworth has done its job.

Our finding: In Morsy data, users who started at Farnsworth 20/7 and closed the gap by 1 WPM per week reached 20/20 (full standard-timing copy) in a median of 8.1 weeks. Users who tried to skip Farnsworth and drill at 20 WPM standard from day one showed a 67% dropout rate within the first two weeks.

Why does this work? The brain files sound patterns by shape, not duration. A 15 WPM dit is not a scaled-up version of a 5 WPM dit — it is a genuinely different shape. Farnsworth timing ensures that the shape your brain memorizes in week one is the same shape it will hear at full speed in week eight. Nothing has to be un-learned.

Daily practice: the one rule that matters most

Our finding: In Morsy usage data, daily-streak learners (7 days per week, 10 minutes per day) reached 15 WPM copy in a median of 5.2 weeks. Learners practicing 3-4 days per week took 11.8 weeks to reach the same milestone — more than twice as long, with fewer total minutes invested.

The mechanism is sleep consolidation. The auditory cortex files new sound patterns during REM sleep. Two nights without exposure and the pattern weakens. Three nights and 30-50% of the previous session’s progress degrades. Daily practice keeps the consolidation cycle running; weekend-only practice means you spend most of each session re-learning what you lost. A 2024 systematic review published in PMC confirmed that distributed practice consistently outperforms massed practice for long-term skill retention across second-language and procedural learning domains (Jang & Kim, PMC, May 2024, retrieved 2026-08-02) — Koch documented the same pattern in his 1935 Morse study, finding that short daily sessions outperformed equivalent time in longer blocks.

What counts as practice? Ten focused minutes with eyes closed, active decoding, writing down what you hear. Not background listening. Not reading a dot-dash chart. Active listening to audio at full character speed, trying to copy each letter before the next one starts.

Two 10-minute sessions per day beats one 20-minute block, because two consolidation opportunities happen in the same day (morning and evening). But if you can only do one session, 10 minutes of focused practice beats 30 minutes of distracted listening every time.

Your 8-week roadmap from zero to 15 WPM

This is the plan that emerges from combining Koch order, Farnsworth timing, and daily practice:

Weeks 1-2: The first 10 characters at 20/7 Start with K and M. Drill until accuracy hits 90% before adding the next character. Add R, then S, then U, then A. By the end of week 2, you should know 6-8 characters at 90%+ accuracy.

Do not add a new character until the existing ones are solid. The temptation is to rush through the alphabet. Rushing produces an alphabet full of shaky characters — the kind of knowledge that collapses under real-speed pressure.

Weeks 3-4: Complete the alphabet at 20/7 Add the remaining characters in Koch order. Most learners complete all 26 letters by the end of week 4. During this phase, close Farnsworth gap from 7 to 9 WPM effective.

Weeks 5-6: Mixed drill at 20/9 → 20/11 Switch from character-by-character drills to random word and callsign drills. The alphabet is in, now you need to build fluency across the full character set at once. Close the gap to 11 WPM effective by the end of week 6.

Weeks 7-8: Speed push to 15 WPM copy Close the Farnsworth gap to 15 WPM effective. At this point most learners can copy plain text at 15 WPM and are ready for callsign-specific drills or beginner ham radio practice texts.

By week 8, a learner who practiced 10 minutes every day is at conversational Morse speed. That is not an optimistic projection — it is the median outcome in Morsy usage data for learners who followed the daily streak pattern.

The tool matters less than the method, but the tool still matters. Whatever you choose needs to:

  1. Use Koch order (not A-Z)
  2. Offer Farnsworth timing (character speed separate from effective speed)
  3. Track streaks or daily consistency
  4. Play audio — no silent chart drills

The five practice modes and when to use each

Morse learning is not a single activity. There are five distinct modes, and most beginners only do one of them:

1. Receive drills. Audio plays, you decode. The core skill. Should make up 70-80% of your practice time.

2. Copy practice. You write down (or type) each letter as you decode it. Slower than pure head-copy, but forces active decoding rather than passive listening.

3. Head-copy. You decode without writing. Builds real-world speed because you are not waiting for your hand. Essential for progressing past 15 WPM.

4. Send practice. You produce Morse — by tapping, keying, or using a soft key in an app. Motor memory from sending accelerates receive recognition. ARRL recommends 80/20 receive-to-send for beginners.

5. QSO simulation. Full conversation drills — callsigns, RST, name, QTH. The bridge from isolated letter copy to real communication.

Seven mistakes that slow learners down

1. Learning A-Z instead of Koch order. As explained above — costs 2-4 extra weeks.

2. Setting character speed below 15 WPM. You memorize the wrong shapes. Re-learning takes longer than starting correctly would have.

3. Using mnemonic charts as a primary study tool. Fine as a lookup reference. Ruinous as a drill.

4. Skipping the four-symbol letters. H, V, F, L, P, J, B, X, C, Y, Z, Q are where most learners go shaky. They feel harder so beginners avoid them. That avoidance compounds.

5. Missing two or more days in a row. Two nights without exposure starts the retention decay. Three nights and you are effectively re-learning.

6. Practicing passively. Background Morse audio while you do other things does not build the active recognition reflex. Ten focused minutes beats forty passive ones.

7. Never sending. Tapping the letters yourself — on any surface — locks in the rhythm from the motor side of the brain. Purely receptive practice takes 30-40% longer to reach fluency.

How Morse code fits into ham radio in 2026

The FCC eliminated the Morse code examination requirement for all US amateur license classes effective February 23, 2007 (FCC Report and Order FCC 06-178, WT Docket No. 05-235, retrieved 2026-08-02). Other national regulators followed over the next several years. CW is now entirely voluntary on the amateur bands.

As of July 16, 2026, there are 710,788 active FCC amateur radio licenses in the USA — Technician 348,962, General 178,721, Extra 153,472 (ARRL FCC License Counts, retrieved 2026-08-02). Globally, the ITU reported more than 3 million licensed amateur operators across 160+ member societies (ITU World Amateur Radio Day 2024, April 2024). Amateur radio has grown, not declined, since the Morse code requirement was removed.

CW remains one of the most active modes. CW requires far less transmit power than voice for equivalent range — a 5-watt CW signal can cross oceans on good conditions that would require 100 watts of SSB voice. Weak-signal DX and contesting are dominated by CW operators, and organizations like CWops run regular on-air events specifically for new operators.
