What is Farnsworth timing?
Farnsworth timing is a dual-speed teaching method for Morse code. Individual letters are sent at a fast character speed (typically 15-20 WPM), but the gaps between letters are stretched so the effective message speed drops to a beginner-friendly 5-7 WPM. Your ear hears the same rhythmic shape it would hear at 20 WPM on the air, with extra thinking time between each letter.
In 2009, the ITU formalised the timing rules for International Morse code in Recommendation M.1677-1. Those rules define standard timing: 1 unit for a dit, 3 units for a dah, 1 unit gap inside a letter, 3 units between letters, 7 units between words. Farnsworth timing modifies only the inter-letter and inter-word gap durations, leaving the dit and dah lengths themselves untouched.
The result is Morse audio where each letter sounds fast and correct, but the message crawls slowly enough that your brain can decode each letter before the next one starts. Nothing about the standard is broken. It’s a training modification, not a spec change.
Why does slow-uniform practice fail?
Because the sound of a letter at 5 WPM is genuinely different from the same letter at 15 WPM. Not just slower. Different. At 5 WPM standard, a dit lasts 240 milliseconds and a dah lasts 720 milliseconds. Your brain memorises the letter as a slow tonal rhythm. When you speed up to 15 WPM (dit = 80 ms), the rhythm compresses into a distinct sound shape, and you have to re-learn the alphabet from the ground up.

His idea was structurally simple: split the two things that “5 WPM” was doing at once. The character shapes were being taught wrong (too slow, wrong rhythm). But the decoding pace was appropriate (slow enough for a beginner brain). Nothing said those two properties had to move together. What is the exact math behind Farnsworth timing?
Every Morse element is measured in dit-lengths. The dit-length in milliseconds is 1200 / WPM. At 20 WPM, one dit is 60 ms. At 5 WPM, one dit is 240 ms. Under Farnsworth, character speed determines the dit-length used for the individual letters. Effective speed determines the total time budget for sending PARIS (the reference word) at that effective WPM.
Practically: at 20/7 Farnsworth, each letter is keyed with 60 ms dits (20 WPM character speed). The gap between letters stretches from the standard 180 ms (3 dits at 20 WPM) to roughly 660 ms, and the word gap stretches from 420 ms to about 1540 ms. Effective PARIS output rate: 7 WPM. When should you use Farnsworth vs standard timing?
Farnsworth is a learning tool. Once you graduate, you drop it. Standard timing is what you’ll use on the air, in contests, in emergencies, and for basically everything except structured learning drills.

What are the most common Farnsworth mistakes?
Watching beginners set up their first Farnsworth session is educational. The same handful of errors show up every time, and each one blocks progress for weeks if not caught.
Starting too fast. New learners see 20/20 and 20/7 and think, “faster is better, I’ll do 25/10.” No. Start at 20/7 or even 18/5 if the audio feels overwhelming. You can always speed up. Slowing down after building the wrong pattern is much harder.
Closing the gap too aggressively. Advancing from 20/7 to 20/15 in three weeks looks efficient. It’s actually a plateau generator. Your ear needs consistent low-speed exposure to consolidate letter shapes. Stick to 1 WPM per week and let accuracy dictate pace.
Mixing Farnsworth with contest speed. Some learners try to drill 20/7 in the morning and 25 WPM standard contest simulation in the afternoon. The two timing formats interfere. Pick one focus per training session.
Using Farnsworth forever. Some operators get comfortable at 20/12 and stay there for years, never closing to 20/20. Farnsworth is a training tool. Real CW is standard timing. Push through the last few WPM even if it feels slow to close.
Dropping character speed below 15 WPM. If 20 WPM character feels too fast, drop to 18/5 or 17/5. Never go below 15 WPM character speed. Below that threshold you are back to slow-standard territory with all its retention problems.
How do you graduate from Farnsworth to standard timing?
When effective speed matches character speed (20/20 or 15/15), you’re already sending and receiving standard-timing Morse without realising it. The graduation is just switching your trainer’s setting from “Farnsworth” to “standard” or bringing the effective slider up to match the character slider. Nothing about the audio changes at that moment.
Most Morsy users graduate at 20/20 after 8-12 weeks of daily practice. Some prefer to graduate earlier at 15/15 and push standard speed from there. Both paths work. What matters is that you do graduate. Sticking at 20/12 for a year builds a permanent handicap.
