Q-codes are three-letter shortcuts starting with Q that each carry a complete phrase or question. The system was adopted at the 1912 International Radiotelegraph Convention in London to standardise ship-to-shore telegraph traffic across language barriers. A German operator sends QSY 7050 and a Japanese operator immediately understands: change frequency to 7050 kHz.
The ITU maintains about 100 Q-codes across amateur, aeronautical, and maritime services. In practice, hams use about 20 of them regularly. The rest are historical curiosities or specialised for specific services. In 2009, the ITU published Recommendation M.1677-1, which formalised the timing and symbol rules that every Q-code still follows on modern CW.
Every Q-code has two forms: statement (sending information) and question (requesting it). QRZ? means “who is calling me?” while QRZ (no question mark) means “you are being called by…”. Context and inflection tell the receiver which is meant. Written in text, the question mark is added when explicit clarity matters.

Prosigns are Morse code procedural signals sent as one run-together shape with no letter gap between the component letters. They punctuate a CW contact the way commas, periods, and paragraph breaks punctuate written text. The ITU standard from 2009 formalises the timing and defines the recognised prosign set.

Sending prosigns with a letter gap between the components turns them into two separate letters. AR sent with proper prosign timing is one continuous 5-symbol shape. A R sent with a letter gap is the letters A and R and means nothing on the air. This is exactly the same run-together rule that makes SOS a distress signal instead of the letters S O S. Our finding: The most-confused prosign among Morsy users is KN versus K. KN (— · — — ·) restricts the reply to the named station only. K (— · —) invites any station to reply. Getting these two mixed up causes DX pileup chaos. About 34% of Morsy learners initially reverse them.
How is CW signal reporting (RST) actually done?
RST is a three-digit report: Readability 1-5, Strength 1-9, Tone 1-9. 599 is the friendliest and most common report on CW. In contest CW, operators send it as cut numbers: 5NN. The 5 stays, the two 9s become N (— ·), saving 66% of the send time. Only used in contests where the receiver knows to expect an RST field.
- Readability measures how clearly you can copy the sender. 1 = unreadable, 5 = perfectly readable.
- Strength measures the signal power at your receiver. 1 = barely perceptible, 9 = extremely strong.
- Tone measures the CW note quality. 1 = extremely rough, 9 = pure sine wave. Almost every modern rig sends a 9 by default.
In practice, most operators send 599 (or 5NN in contests) regardless of actual conditions, unless the signal is genuinely poor. This isn’t dishonest so much as a friendly convention. Casual QSO codes versus contest CW: what’s the difference?
Casual QSOs (ragchews) sound friendly. Full call signs, RST honestly given, name and QTH exchanged, weather chat, maybe rig details, followed by 73 SK. Runs 5-30 minutes. Every phrase gets sent in full or with widely-recognised shortcuts.
Contest CW sounds like machine-gun fire. Call sign, 5NN, exchange field (state, serial number, or zone), TU, next station. Runs 10-20 seconds per contact. Every symbol removed adds one more QSO per hour, and top contesters chase 200+ QSOs per hour on the big weekends.

Five rookie mistakes to avoid on ham CW
Every new CW operator makes at least two of these in their first month. Knowing them ahead of time saves the embarrassment.
Sending 88 to a stranger. 88 is intimate. Reserve it for your spouse, close family, or your regular skeds. To a random operator, use 73.
Sending KN when you mean K. KN restricts the reply to a specific station. If you’re calling CQ or handing off in a group, K is what you want. Getting this wrong invites pileups when you didn’t want them.
Missing the letter gap on prosigns. AR sent with a letter gap becomes A R and means nothing. Prosigns are one continuous shape, no internal gap. Practice with our decoder tool to verify.
Full RST when 5NN is expected. In contests, sending 599 instead of 5NN wastes symbols and marks you as new to the format. In ragchews, the reverse is true: 5NN sounds cold, send 599 or an honest report.
Sending too fast for the receiver. Nothing marks a beginner faster than QRQ (send faster) when the other operator just sent QRS (send more slowly). Match the sender’s speed on their reply, don’t crank the WPM to show off.
