Learning the Morse code letters first is the norm. Numbers usually come second, and most people expect them to be harder. They are actually easier. Every digit follows a single shifting pattern, so you can derive any number from any other one in your head. Once you see the pattern, you never forget the chart.

Every digit uses exactly five symbols per ITU-R Recommendation M.1677-1 (2009). The pattern shifts one position per digit, which is the whole trick to remembering them.

The one-symbol-per-position pattern
Here is the pattern most people never notice. Look at digits 1 through 5:
- 1: one dit, then four dahs
- 2: two dits, then three dahs
- 3: three dits, then two dahs
- 4: four dits, then one dah
- 5: five dits, zero dahs
The number of leading dits matches the digit value up to 5, and the trailing dahs fill the remaining slots. At 5 you have all dits.
Then from 6 to 0 the pattern reverses:
- 6: one dah, then four dits
- 7: two dahs, then three dits
- 8: three dahs, then two dits
- 9: four dahs, then one dit
- 0: five dahs, zero dits
Starting at 6, the number of leading dahs equals digit − 5. So 6 has one dah (6−5), 7 has two (7−5), 8 has three, 9 has four, 0 (treated as ten) has five.
Learn this rule once and you can derive any digit from scratch. You never memorize 10 separate patterns. When I introduce numbers to Morsy learners, I show them 1 and 5 first, then let them figure out 2, 3, 4 by extending the pattern themselves. Nine times out of ten they can do it without a hint.
What are cut numbers in Morse code
Cut numbers are ham radio shortcuts. Instead of sending the full five-symbol digit, operators substitute a shorter letter whose pattern approximates the digit. This saves significant time in fast-paced contest CW where the same numbers are exchanged thousands of times per weekend.

The most common cut numbers you will hear are T (0), A (1), N (9), and E (5). Sending a call sign like “W3EEE” instead of “W3555” is standard practice in the annual ARRL DX contest and CQ World Wide.
The tradeoff is unambiguity. A cut number can be mistaken for the actual letter if the sender did not signal it was a number. Contest operators handle this through context: the exchange format is fixed (call sign, then RST report, then serial number or state), so a listener knows where numbers must appear. In casual QSO or emergency traffic, always send full digits.
Ham radio number codes: 73, 88, 55, 5NN
Not every Morse number is a literal digit. Ham radio inherited a set of two-digit codes from the 19th-century Western Union telegraph code list, and a few survived into modern practice. Sending “73” as a sign-off is universal in ham radio Morse. Sending “88” implies a level of intimacy that would be strange between strangers. Operators who know each other well use 88 with their spouses. Everyone else uses 73. Getting this wrong is a rookie tell.

Digit versus cut number: when to use which
Cut numbers save time. Full digits stay unambiguous. The decision comes down to context.
Use full digits when:
- Sending emergency traffic. Never abbreviate anything in an SOS or QRR (emergency) transmission.
- Any casual QSO where the person you are talking to may not be a contest regular.
- Numbers in a mixed context (a call sign that happens to contain digits, an address, a phone number).
- Any time the receiver has to write down the number without knowing in advance what it will be.
Use cut numbers when:
- Contest CW where speed matters and the exchange format is known in advance.
- The RST signal report field, where 599 is nearly always the value and shortening to 5NN saves 12 symbols.
- Serial number exchanges in contests where three-digit numbers get exchanged hundreds of times per hour.

Sending numbers on a straight key vs paddle
Sending numbers is where beginner fists fall apart, and I have watched it happen dozens of times in Morsy user testing. The reason is that numbers require a long, uninterrupted sequence of the same symbol type (five dahs for 0, five dits for 5), and holding perfect timing across five identical symbols is hard.
On a straight key (up-down lever), the challenge is spacing dahs consistently. A common error is speeding up as you go, so 5 dahs sound like 4.5. Practice with a metronome at 60 BPM, one dit per beat, and force each dah to occupy exactly 3 beats. Sending 0 should take 15 beats plus 4 inter-symbol gaps of 1 beat each: 19 beats total. Slow, but correct.
On an iambic paddle (side-to-side lever with auto-repeat), consistency comes free because the electronics repeat perfect dits or perfect dahs at your set speed. The challenge shifts to hitting the right paddle for the right count. Muscle memory usually kicks in after a few dozen sends. Contest ops often practice sending 5NN thousands of times as a warm-up drill for exactly this reason.

Common number errors and how to fix them
5 confused with H. H is four dits (····), 5 is five dits (·····). At high WPM the difference is one dit-length, which is under 100 ms at 15 WPM. Fix: count in your head as you send, and when receiving, use context (numbers appear where the exchange format expects them).
0 confused with T. 0 is five dahs (—————), T is a single dah (—). If letter gaps get compressed, 0 can sound like TTTTT run together, which reads as a garbage sequence. Fix: leave a clear letter gap after every digit and never send 0 near another dah-heavy letter without a full 3-unit break.
6 confused with B. 6 is dah-dit-dit-dit-dit (—····), B is dah-dit-dit-dit (—···). Same relationship as 5 versus H, one extra dit. Fix: same context strategy, use the position in the message to disambiguate.
Cut-number confusion. New listeners sometimes hear “5NN” and copy “ENN” (thinking E is a letter). Fix: know the contest exchange format in advance. In CQ World Wide, RST comes right after the call sign, so E in that slot is always cut-5.

A practice drill for Morse numbers

- Type a random 3-digit number (say
247) and hit Play. Listen twice. - On paper or in a text field, write the digits you heard.
- Compare to the typed input.
- Repeat with a different number.
