Blinking Morse code with a flashlight is one of the oldest optical signalling techniques still in daily use. Ships blink it, search and rescue teams blink it, scouts learn to blink it, and it is the first thing to try in a real emergency when your phone is dead and your voice does not carry. The technique is simple. The timing is the whole difficulty.
Here is how to blink Morse with a flashlight properly, how far the signal actually reaches, what SOS looks like when blinked right, and why most YouTube tutorials teach it wrong.
Short flash for dit, long flash for dah — that is the system
You have two building blocks. A short flash of light is a dit. A long flash is a dah. The critical rule is that a dah lasts three times as long as a dit. That 3:1 ratio is what makes the signal readable to the receiver — it is what tells them “this was a long flash, not two shorts run together.”
- Dit: A quick on-off — as short as your flashlight button can manage while still producing a clean flash. Aim for about 0.2 seconds of light at slow signalling speed.
- Dah: Hold the light on for three times the dit length. About 0.6 seconds at the same speed.
Between symbols inside a letter, wait one dit-length (light off). Between letters, three dit-lengths off. Between words, seven. These gaps are exactly as important as the flashes themselves. Skip them and your message dissolves into noise.
The full timing at signalling speeds
Flashlight Morse is typically sent slowly — 5-10 words per minute — because the receiver has to visually track flashes across a dark landscape and the sender’s finger cannot switch a button as fast as a radio key. Here are the actual timings at 5 WPM signalling speed (dit = 240 ms):

At 10 WPM, halve everything. At 15 WPM (fast for optical signalling), divide by three. The math is 1200 / WPM for one dit in milliseconds — the same timing formula every Morse system uses.
How to blink SOS with a flashlight — the right way
The distress signal is three shorts, three longs, three shorts. Sent correctly, it is one continuous nine-flash pattern with no letter gaps in between. This is the whole point of SOS being a prosign — the run-together shape is unmistakable and cannot be confused with any three-letter sequence.

Nine flashes back to back, with only single dit-length gaps between symbols. No 3-unit letter gap between the three groups. Then pause 3-5 seconds and repeat the whole pattern again. Keep repeating until you are seen or you run out of battery.
Almost every YouTube “how to SOS with a flashlight” video teaches it wrong. They show three short flashes, pause, three long flashes, pause, three short flashes — with clear letter gaps between the groups. That is not SOS. That is the letters S O S with normal spacing, which is not a legal maritime distress signal under International Radio Regulations, Article 32 (ITU) and is much easier to confuse with random light in the distance. How far can a flashlight Morse signal travel
Farther than most people expect. Human eyes are extraordinarily sensitive to isolated points of light in the dark, and Morse’s on-off pattern is exactly the kind of signal that catches attention against a static background.
Rough visibility ranges on a clear moonless night, receiver looking in your direction:

These numbers assume clear air, dark background, and someone looking in the right direction. Rain, fog, city lights, and daylight all cut range dramatically — from 5 km down to a few hundred metres in some conditions.
A signal that isn’t being watched for is useless at any distance. This is why real emergency signalling repeats SOS with pauses between — you are trying to catch the eye of someone who might glance in your direction over a several-minute window.
Practicing flashlight Morse
You do not need a real flashlight to practice the timing. Use any light source you can turn on and off with a button — a lamp, a phone flashlight, a laser pointer against a wall. The physical motion of pressing a button and releasing is what you are training, along with the sense of “how long is one dit-length.”
Start with SOS, forever. It is the most useful nine-symbol pattern in existence, and if you can send it correctly you have proven you can hold ratios and letter gaps. Practise SOS for a week before trying full words.
Get a metronome app. Set it to 60 BPM. Each beat is one dit at 5 WPM speed. Flash the light for one beat (dit) or three beats (dah). Silence for one, three, or seven beats depending on which gap you are in. This locks in the timing.
Record yourself. Point a phone camera at the flashlight and record your SOS attempts. Play them back at 0.5x speed. You will immediately see whether your dahs are actually three times longer than your dits, or whether your letter gaps are getting eaten. This is the fastest way to fix ratio drift.

Non-emergency uses for flashlight Morse
Emergency signalling is the obvious use, but there are others:

- Search and rescue. Ground teams use light signals to coordinate at night when radio silence is required.
- Scouts and cadets. Signalling merit badges include flashlight Morse tests.
- Astronomy and stargazing groups. Coordinating without disturbing dark-adapted vision.
- Camping communication. Signalling across a campsite at night without shouting.
- Escape rooms and puzzle design. A working Morse-flashing prop is a classic room element.
For non-emergency use you can send at higher speeds — 10-15 WPM — because the receiver knows the message is coming and can concentrate. Real emergency signalling stays slow (5 WPM) because you are trying to catch the eye of someone who is not looking for you.
Safety notes
Do not shine flashlights at aircraft or vehicles. Laser pointers and high-intensity torches can temporarily blind pilots and drivers. This applies to helicopter search-and-rescue too — if a helicopter is looking for you, wave a light in a wide arc or place it on the ground and point it up, do not aim it at the cockpit.
Do not send fake SOS. Sending a real distress signal when you are not in distress is a crime in most jurisdictions and diverts rescue resources from people who actually need them. Practise SOS on your own or in a training context — do not flash it across a bay you can see from your house.
Batteries fail. In a real emergency your flashlight will die faster than you expect. Send SOS bursts of 30-60 seconds and then rest for a few minutes. Flashing continuously burns the battery in an hour and reduces the chance a rescuer sees a burst.
Cold kills batteries. Alkaline cells lose 50%+ capacity below freezing. Lithium and lithium-ion hold up much better. If you are in cold-weather territory, carry lithium cells for your emergency light.
